I am someone who is always seeking out nutrient dense meal options. I like to get the maximum health benefits I can from everything I put into my body...including coffee.
I am going to share my coffee choices with you in hopes you may learn a thing or two!
First off, the most important choice you make about your coffee is the brand you buy it from. I realize if you have always drank the same kind of coffee and don't seem to have any issues from it, then you may not see the issue but give me an opportunity to explain.
Coffee can commonly contain a mold called Ochratoxin. Ochratoxin is a class of several different chemicals known as mycotoxins. Unlike other fungal toxins, mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by mold, and we unknowingly ingest them in food. I have been living an organic lifestyle for about a decade and was shocked last year to find out I have four mycotoxins that have built up in my system and are wreaking havoc. Removing them is not an easy process so I am hoping to save anyone reading this from that experience!
Symptoms of Mycotoxin Poisoning are:
Poor memory and confusion
Sensitivity to light
Tingling and numbness in your hands and feet
Appetite swings and weight gain
Increased thirst
Hair loss
Metallic taste in your mouth
Abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea
Muscle cramps
Joint pain
Anxiety
Lightheaded
Difficulty concentrating
I am assuming you most likely will not get mycotoxin poisoning just from drinking coffee, but I honestly don't know because it will depend on the brand and how much you drink. In my case, I need to eliminate all sources of mycotoxins so I can only drink a few different coffee brands as most companies do not test for them or care about eliminating them from their coffee because it is more expensive. One brand that is safe to drink is Bulletprooof, and the owner Dave Asprey wrote a great article that will give you a lot more helpful information than I am going to do here.
Even though Bulletproof is safe, I prefer the Four Sigmatic brand simply because I am trying to put even more nutrition into my coffee. The Four Sigmatic brand specializes in different mushrooms that help you think, perform, and create better. Most of their products are in beverage form in combination with tea or coffee. I buy their ground coffee with lion's mane mushroom in it called "Think" and their little instant coffee packets for when I am on the go, my favorites are "Think" and "Get Going". Those are also super handy to throw in a smoothie or recipe. I have tried a lot of their products and have only found one I didn't enjoy!
Lion's mane has been shown to protect against dementia, reduce mild symptoms of anxiety and depression, and can help repair nerve damage. It also has strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-boosting abilities and been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, ulcers and diabetes. Since I have nerve damage from the Guillain Barre Syndrome and chronic Lyme has been shown to cause Alzheimer's in nearly 100% of the cases - I am actively trying to help my brain and nervous system every day by drinking this coffee vs. some random brand.
Also, Four Sigmatic was the first brand to market with all these superfood mushroom drinks. In the past two years I have noticed more companies pooping up trying to do the same thing. I have ordered most of them and the only ones I truly enjoy the flavor of are Four Sigmatic.
Now back to the Bulletproof brand! I do add a supplement from them into my coffee. That supplement is called Brain Octane Oil. It’s the all-around best oil for ketogenic energy. It produces more ketones than coconut oil, which means more ketone benefits like amplified energy, fat loss and metabolic burn. It helps with cognitive function and focus too. I would like it for energy but I still have my brain health on the top of my mind as to why I add this into my daily routine.
I make my own cashew milk for my morning cappuccinos so I have healthy nutrients, fats and protein coming from that too! All you need to do is soak a cup of cashews in hot water for 15 minutes, rinse, throw in the blender with four cups of water and a date if you want a little sweetness. I may have a cup of coffee every morning like most people but the nutrients and health benefits packed into that cup are huge!
While you are at home and making your own coffee these days, take some time to think about how you could get more health benefits in your cup!
