The journey of dying is as profound and significant as the journey of life. It is a transition that can be approached with care, compassion, and holistic support to ensure that the individual passes peacefully and with dignity.
The role of a death doula, often referred to as an end-of-life doula, is to provide this support, guiding the dying and their families through the emotional, spiritual, and practical aspects of this final transition.
As I am working towards becoming a death doula, I am reflecting on the tools I already have and how I can use them differently. A framework I find incredibly helpful for my clients is the wellness wheel. Upon reflection, I have discovered it is powerful when assessing life AND death. I thought I would share this information in case it can help you care for a loved one or if you are curious about what a death doula can help with.
Understanding the Wellness Wheel
The Wellness Wheel is a holistic model that encompasses various dimensions of well-being, including physical, emotional, spiritual, environmental, social, and intellectual health. Originally designed to promote balanced living, the Wellness Wheel can be adapted to help individuals and their families navigate the end-of-life process with grace and mindfulness. Whether it’s helping a person find spiritual peace, facilitating heartfelt goodbyes, or simply ensuring comfort in their final days, the Wellness Wheel guides us in providing holistic and meaningful end-of-life care.
In this way, the work of a death doula, supported by the principles of the Wellness Wheel, becomes a beautiful and sacred journey, helping individuals and their families embrace the transition from life to death with love, grace, and peace. I believe you may also be able to implement this on some level.
Let's dive into the eight aspects of the wellness wheel:
1. Physical Health: Comfort and Pain Management
As the body prepares for its final journey, physical comfort becomes a primary concern. The death doula works closely with medical professionals to ensure effective pain management and comfort care, such as through the use of medications, natural remedies, massage, aromatherapy, or gentle movement. Additionally, they may guide families in creating a peaceful physical environment—soft lighting, soothing scents, and comfortable bedding—to help the individual feel as comfortable as possible.
2. Emotional Health: Processing Feelings and Fears
Facing death can stir a complex mix of emotions, including fear, sadness, anger, and even relief. The death doula provides a compassionate presence, offering a safe space for the dying person and their loved ones to express their emotions without judgment. Techniques such as active listening, emotional validation, breathwork, and guided relaxation can help process these feelings, fostering emotional peace.
3. Spiritual Health: Finding Meaning and Peace
Spirituality often becomes a focal point at the end of life, as individuals seek to make sense of their journey and find peace with the unknown. The death doula assists in exploring spiritual beliefs and practices, whether through prayer, meditation, rituals, or simply reflecting on life’s meaning. Some people feel called to heal the past in order to find peace and tranquility before death. By honoring the individual’s spiritual needs and preferences, the death doula helps create a sense of completion and spiritual tranquility.
4. Environmental Health: Creating a Healing Space
The environment in which a person spends their final days can have a significant impact on their sense of peace. The death doula helps to create a healing space that reflects the individual’s values and preferences—whether it’s through decluttering, introducing elements of nature, or surrounding them with cherished objects and memories. This nurturing environment supports the emotional and spiritual well-being of both the individual and their loved ones.
5. Social Health: Strengthening Connections
Social well-being is about the relationships and connections that give life meaning. The death doula facilitates meaningful interactions with loved ones, helping to mend broken relationships, express unspoken feelings, and share memories. They may also assist in legacy projects, such as creating memory books or recording personal stories, ensuring that the individual’s impact on their community and loved ones endures.
6. Intellectual Health: Stimulating the Mind
Even in the final stages of life, intellectual stimulation can provide comfort and joy. The death doula may engage the individual in activities that stimulate the mind, such as reading, listening to music, or discussing topics of interest. These activities help maintain a sense of identity and engagement with the world, even as the individual prepares to let go.
7. Occupational Health: Leaving a Legacy
Occupational health, in the context of dying, can be seen as the fulfillment of one's life purpose and the desire to leave a legacy. The death doula supports the individual in reflecting on their life's work, contributions, and the legacy they wish to leave behind. This may involve helping them to pass on wisdom, creating lasting memories for loved ones, or finding closure in unfinished business.
8. Financial Health: Planning and Security
Financial concerns often weigh heavily on individuals and families during the end-of-life process. The death doula assists in navigating these practical matters, such as ensuring that wills are in order, discussing funeral preferences, and helping families understand the costs and logistics of the dying process. Addressing these issues can alleviate stress and allow the individual and their loved ones to focus on what truly matters—being present with one another.
Integrating the Wellness Wheel
By integrating the Wellness Wheel, we can all help provide a comprehensive and compassionate approach to end-of-life care. This model not only addresses the physical needs of the dying but also honors their emotional, spiritual, and social well-being, ensuring that the transition is as peaceful and fulfilling as possible.
Although I think we would all love to have a death doula by our side, many people have to go on this journey with their loved ones alone. I hope looking at this process through the lens of the wellness wheel can help you facilitate a more peaceful transition. I recommend making a list with each aspect of the wellness wheel to see how you could apply this model yourself. If I can be of any support, please let me know.
The Wellness Wheel offers a structured yet flexible framework, allowing death doulas to tailor their support to the unique needs and wishes of each individual. Whether it’s helping a person find spiritual peace, facilitating heartfelt goodbyes, or simply ensuring comfort in their final days, the Wellness Wheel guides the death doula in providing holistic and meaningful end-of-life care.
In this way, the work of a death doula, supported by the principles of the Wellness Wheel, becomes a beautiful and sacred journey, helping individuals and their families embrace the transition from life to death with love, grace, and peace.
